Leadership and Management Workshops: Why Leadership Is the Missing Ingredient in Management
I am an avid lover of clever sayings as in them is enshrined the wisdom of the centuries. To me they are food for the soul. Today these two come to mind:
"It is neither the fittest nor the strongest of the species that survives
but the one most adaptable to change." And "Those that cannot embrace change will find themselves equipped for a world that no longer exists"
Reflect on these a while because they speak to the core of the problems we face today as individuals as a nation and as an international global village. Things are changing; they always have, but it's the pace of change that has moved up a gear. We have only two choices. Change or die.
Changing circumstances bring with them the need for a fresh leadership approach.
"If we keep doing what we've always done; We'll keep getting what we've always got"
We need to take a fresh look at our leadership operation. The drivers that were valid yesterday may no longer be. The market may have changed, the competitive structure, peoples buying habits. How do we interact with our customers? Are we giving the market what we like to give them or are we giving them what they want? What will they want tomorrow? If we wait until tomorrow we will miss the boat.
Change is difficult, it stinks! But, it's here to stay so get over it. The "good old days" are still to come. Remember the past, especially the lessons learnt, but embrace the future. What change demands though is effective leadership. True leadership to motivate the tribe to follow them through thick and thin. True leaders don't look at the situation as it is but as it can be. They live the dream. They paint a picture and then lead their followers there. They are the catalysts of change.
Managers on the other hand ensure that the corporation makes the most effective use of its resources. They follow rules and procedures. As necessary as they are they are often ill-equipped in leadership abilities. Leaders are not necessarily those at the top of the pile. Often the top of the pyramid is too far removed from the base to understand the problem. We are all leaders if we chose to be.
However with leadership comes responsibility, often conflict and ridicule. To bring about change means leaving the herd, turning ones back on the crowd. Leadership can be a lonely vigil; that's why there are so few leaders. Few are prepared to suffer the discomfort. However history had shown that it is when things are at their worst that true leadership emerges. Awake the leader in you.
