The Leadership Training Institute offers workshops that teach participants to confidently use proven methods of management leadership to lead people and help them plan, organize and control their work assignments. Workshop participants will also learn to use resources made available to them more effectively.

Workshop Objectives:

At the 90-day post-workshop assessment, participants will have:

  • Demonstrated (on the job) an understanding that the intuitive style of leadership (self-centered, directive) will only work in special circumstances and will have made noticeable improvement in working themselves toward a management leadership style (participatory, empowering)
  • Spent more time "leading and managing" and less time "doing"
  • Used the action planning process to plan and implement at least one important initiative that has a positive impact on business results
  • Used the decision-making technique on the job to arrive at sound decisions that have or will have a positive impact on business results
  • Demonstrated greater ability to function in teamwork situations
  • Developed and successfully used a system of control by exception

Leadership Development Training Workshop: People First Leadership

People first leadership is different from virtually any other leadership material that you have ever seen. I'll give you four reasons why this is so.

1. It is a systemic approach to leadership. People first leadership outlines a logical, unified, self-consistent system of thought. This system of leadership has a clearly identified beginning point, a determinant order, and an end that is the necessary conclusion of its individual elements. This system does not present a few good points thrown together in a disjointed, fortuitous aggregate, capriciously called a "leadership program." Unfortunately, that sort of helter-skelter approach to leadership training has been the rule, rather than the exception, for teachers and trainers for centuries.

The philosopher Socrates is venerated and studied on college campuses. Yet Gordon Clark, Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at Butler University for twenty-eight years, observed that Socrates would often discuss one virtue, and then arbitrarily jump to an explanation of another quality without offering any defined progression of thought that explained why he had moved from the one point to the next. Many of the qualities Socrates discussed were admirable ones, but there was no system-no determinant order-that unified his presentation. People First® Leadership, on the other hand, moves through a logical progression of the attitudes and actions that are essential for world-class leadership and these individual aspects of the program are arranged in a harmonious, mutually supporting, hierarchical order.

2. The foundation of people first leadership is philosophical, rather than functional. Virtually all books and seminars that examine the subject of leadership describe and debate the best business practices. These programs focus entirely on what the successful leader does. To my knowledge, people first leadership is the only system that asks, "Is there anything more fundamental to successful leadership than the best practices?" The answer to the question is "Yes"; the best practices are derivatives of the best philosophy. Stated another way, the best philosophy is the best antecedent to the best business practices.

It is an incontrovertible fact that theory precedes practice; knowledge precedes application; philosophy precedes performance; and beliefs precede behavior. In other words, being precedes doing. If every practice is the expression of a particular theory, then the only proper starting point for a leadership program is with the best business philosophy! That philosophy will be the very heart and soul of the practice that follows.

A great business is not built on the best practices; it is built on the rock-solid foundation of the best beliefs. Please do not misunderstand; practices have their derivative value, and utilizing the best skill-sets is essential to people first leadership. But the incorporation of sound furnishings does not make up for an unsound foundation. Far too many teachers and trainers today talk about performing in excellence without articulating-perhaps without even understanding-a philosophy of excellence. Before we begin to utilize the best practices, we must first learn what comprises the foundation for those practices. "Well begun is half-done," the old maxim advises; therefore, we will begin with good leadership philosophy. When leaders operate from the foundation of best beliefs, then they are equipped to utilize the best practices.

3. The theme of people first leadership is knowledge.

The ten core competencies of the people first leader are presented according to the LEADERSHIP acrostic:

These ten core competencies represent a logically developed blend of beliefs and behaviors that equip leaders to turn ordinary people into extraordinary performers. As we examine each of these success strategies in detail, you will see that they are united by one common theme: knowledge. People first leaders have a detailed knowledge of both the theory and the practice of each core competency. Knowledge is the common currency of all leaders.

People first leaders have a thorough knowledge of the product(s) that their organizations offer, as well as a knowledge of market conditions and industry and/or economic trends that could inspire (or dictate) a change in those product offerings.

People first leaders have tremendous knowledge of people. They thoroughly understand themselves-their own strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for personal and professional growth. They have knowledge of the individuals with whom they live and work, and they understand what motivates ordinary people to become extraordinary performers. They also possess a broad knowledge of those who are the lifeblood of their organizations-the customers. In short, people first leaders are masters of human performance technology.

People first leaders understand and utilize the creative thinking skills that can be applied to their particular field of endeavor. They recognize that the human mind is marvelously facile and creative, and they have studied the established techniques that harness the power of that brilliant mind and inspire men and women to new heights of innovation and ideation. People look to people first leaders for answers because they know their jobs, they know their industries, and they know how to bring out the best in those around them.

4. People first leadership debunks the "Great Man" Theory.

There is a pervasive myth that exists within most organizations: the notion that there is one individual who embodies all the core competencies of superior leadership. This person is the so-called "Great Man," the quintessential leader, who has been blessed above and beyond the rest of us mere mortals and operates at a level of excellence in a number of different arenas. Companies spend a great deal of money searching for this extraordinary individual, and more often than not express disappointment when the person they hire does not measure up to the impossibly high standard they have set.

Instead of searching for one superhuman man or woman, organizations should develop a leadership team whose members' strengths complement and magnify their teammates' abilities. A people first leader is not afraid of other people being powerful; a true leader will not promote obsequious "yes-men" and women whose abilities have no potential to eclipse the leader's talents. A people first leader is perfectly willing to confess his or her weaknesses in order to allow others to showcase their personal ability in those particular areas. You might say that people first leadership seeks to promote the "Great Team" theory. People first leaders surround themselves with a diverse team of individuals who complement the leader and display strength in those areas where the leader does not.

In my next newsletter, we will begin to examine the ten core competencies of the people first leader. These are the attitudes and actions which, when carefully studied and applied, will make a leadership team extraordinary.
