Being a leader is no mean task. There are people looking up to you, and in fact scrutinizing your every move. At the same time, you have to ensure your leadership is effective because a lot of things, even the growth of your organization itself, depend on it. There are a host of things that can be detrimental to effective leadership and these are the trappings you need to avoid.
1. Confrontation - Confrontation may suggest a battle. This usually doesn't work for anyone's good. On the other hand you have a duty to address issues...change your mind set to problem solving and finding common purpose, rather than a battle ground mentality.
2. Acting without Knowledge - It is leadership hara-kiri to act without the right knowledge. This is totally unprofessional and the results could be disastrous to your leadership credibility. Not to forget, it can jeopardize your leadership position immensely.
4. Not Speaking up When There Is a Problem – Leadership means having to have the courage to speak up when a particular issue arises. You cannot just sit back and watch events unwrap and maintain a stoic silence. You have to be a part of it all, and take remedial action whenever you can.
5. Getting Intimidated – Leadership means you must show courage in your words and deeds. You shouldn't be scared of your rivals, your subordinates or anyone else for that matter if you are convinced you are right. Conviction is an important key to your leadership and once that is in place, you needn't get intimidated by what goes on around you.
6. Clamming up - This is another thing leaders should avoid. Open up when there is something to say. Let your team know what's going on in your mind. Solutions arise through conversation, not by being distant and secretive.
7. Gossiping - Gossiping only lowers respect for a leader. As a leader, you need to think about facts and only abide by them. Act only when you are convinced. Speak only when you know for a fact.
This is what effective leaders are made of. These are the behaviors to avoid. If your intention is to be mentioned favorably later on, then try avoiding these behaviors.
