  • Spent more time "leading and managing" and less time "doing"
  • Used the action planning process to plan and implement at least one important initiative that has a positive impact on business results
  • Used the decision-making technique on the job to arrive at sound decisions that have or will have a positive impact on business results

Leadership Training Seminar - The 3 Top Leadership Mistakes

Being a leader is not easy. Even people who are doing well otherwise in leadership may falter at certain key aspects of leadership and that might put the progress of a task in jeopardy. That is the reason why proper leadership training is essential. When leadership training has been adequately and effectively provided to the key players of an organization, mistakes such as the following are less likely to occur.

Mistake # 1: Stifling Creative Thought

Advertently or inadvertently, a lot of leaders snuff out creative ideas and thoughts that hatch among their subordinates. They might play down ideas proposed to them and even reject them outright. This deters any further creative thought and as a result, the team might move towards stagnancy.

Instead, the right approach would be to weigh the pros and cons of the ideas proposed to them. Leadership training should include this point. Just by asking more questions to the people who have initiated ideas, leadership means allowing these idea initiators to put their thoughts in better perspective. This is also a welcome sign for other people to think out of the box and bring forward their ideas as well.

Mistake # 2: Dumbing Down Employees

Leaders who talk down to their employees for mistakes that they might have committed are setting a very bad precedent. In most cases, this kind of "dumbing down" is done because a particular subordinate does not conform to the ideals that the leader him- or herself follows. The big problem that might happen is that every subordinate might just turn into a clone of each other, doing exactly what the leader wants them to do.

Instead, when faced with an errant team member, leaders must think why this particular employee is behaving out of the prevailing mold. There could be genius waiting to happen. However, there could be a serious limitation within the team member as well. This is where leaders need to use their discerning eye and think, which is very important to be done before reprimanding a subordinate.

Mistake # 3: Not Allowing Team Members to Grow

Leadership training trains potential leaders not to harbor a superiority complex within themselves. Good leaders are those who wish their subordinates to grow, which is often commensurate with their own growth. A leader is often adjudged by the subordinates he or she has, and it becomes very important for leaders to give subordinates all incentives and resources for their individual personal and professional growth.
