Great leaders are driven by a vision. They can engage and then enroll others in this vision, and use it to guide their organizations to better futures. Yet it is great leaders' ability to lead successfully over, around and through uncertainty and barriers they encounter that often leads to legendary tales of leadership. Not surprisingly, resilience is one of the top characteristics of great leaders.
Think of a leader you admire. Inevitably, there's at least one experience in his or her past - and probably multiple experiences - that required great resilience to ensure success. This leader was able to tap a reserve of strong will, perseverance, and the belief that things would work out, somehow, in the face of a plan and original expectations that were not working out.
Experience requiring resilience may have brought with it some battle scars, yet resilience for any of us grows largely from the experience - not just the belief, but the actual experience - of knowing that we have survived great challenges before, and we can do it again.
As one successful long-time management leader explained, "There have been times when I came out of a situation and thought, 'I CAN'T go back in there tomorrow.'"
"But I woke up the next day and thought, 'Hey! We can try it THIS way!' Usually, it worked - and I hadn't done nearly as badly as I thought when I was discouraged. "
And, he added, "Sometimes the things that look like obstacles, ultimately, are not obstacles at all."
If you are resilient, it means you're able to:
- Bounce back
- Keep your eye, your actions, and your belief in your ultimate success focused on your ultimate goal
- Be creative under pressure and create or see a new path you didn't even notice before.
This is akin to a river changing course in response to a barrier or boulder in its path. The water, even though blocked, continues to move powerfully, finding and carving a new route. If the need for resiliency is high enough, you may, at first, go through a period of denial or disbelief that you're caught in dire or difficult circumstances. If there's nothing you can do to change the conditions you find yourself in, face them directly. As you do, at some point, adrenalin and creativity will kick in.
Don't panic if it doesn't happen right away. If you stay calm - or get calm - and focus on your final outcome, it will. You'll be able to soon find or create a solution for the new circumstances. And soon, you'll be well on your way again.
