Some people say that a good leader should be a good follower first. But in today's high impact and intensely demanding corporate world, "followership" leadership is a necessary skill that most managers need to learn. Here are six tips on how to exhibit followership leadership.
1. Learn about organizational management hierarchy and culture. You should know the reporting lines as well as the flow of communication through the management rungs. Of course, most of the directives come from the big bosses high up the ladder of command. It helps to know more about those people at the top.
2. Get to know your immediate supervisors. More than just the names displayed on the nameplates on top of their desks, you should know their personality types, their work habits and also the things that they like and dislike in their followers. You should know how best to deal with them. Your management career growth and your aspirations might just depend on how you treat your immediate boss.
3. Display professionalism and good work ethics. This is simple and easy to follow. You don't have to be a leader to display professionalism and good work ethics. If you truly believe in the vision, mission and goals of the organization that you belong to, you cannot help but be professional. If you are in the lower levels of the management hierarchy, people will notice this.
4. Understand company rules and procedures. You have to follow these rules and procedures before you can implement them. Simple rules about attendance, tardiness and how to save money on office supplies are important ones. Don't neglect the small ones in favor of the big ones. This can also help people know that you are truly committed to the management organization.
5. Inspire others to follow. When you show others what can be done given the constraints of the rules and regulations of the organization, you can inspire them to do the same. And when you do, you score some points towards leadership.
6. Reward good followers. If you acknowledge the efforts of your people to become good followers, they will feel treasured and appreciated. They will come to love you more because of that. As much as possible, avoid punishments. But be lavish in your praise. This is one of the great ways to win people's loyalty to you and to your management leadership.
It is easy to lead and order people around. It is more difficult to get their hearts. When you show that you are a good follower, you can also show them that you are a great leader.
