Leadership Skills: Are You the Captain of Your Ship?

In these turbulent times, with the winds of change blowing at an ever increasing speed, there is a greater need than ever before to take charge of our ship of life and navigate it to calmer shores.

At times we may be heading in the 'right' direction, yet other forces may rock the boat. At such times, we are called upon to use the experiences we have gained thus far and patiently ride out the storm. A difficulty only encourages us to be more attentive in life, just as a strong wind alerts the captain of a probable storm.

To be the captain means to take charge of your ship - to have the spiritual, mental, and emotional skills to navigate your life; to forecast the weather and decide which crew to have on board.

When caught in a storm, the captain's first and foremost duty is the safety his passengers. He then looks at his compass and determines north. An experienced captain will steer the ship to the centre of the storm, not try to run from it; for that is the safest place. Once in the centre, the ship travels with the storm until it subsides.

On any given day, on the same wind, one ship may sail east while another west. The position of their sails determines their direction and not the direction of the wind. Hence, we cannot blame the winds of change for the direction in which we are headed. We need to position our sails in the direction we would like to see our life heading.

Storm or no storm, while navigating the sea of life, we need to get out our compass from time to time, and find our true north. Our north is our purpose, the reason why we are here on Mother Earth. For some it's to share and communicate and yet for others it's to continually cause grief and sorrow!

Our compass is made up of our personal values and principles - in which direction are these pointing? If they are not aligned to our north, our purpose, then there is a lack of congruence between our thoughts and actions i.e. the direction we need to be heading in. For example, if my life purpose is to communicate or share information, then my vocation needs to be in the area of sharing wisdom and information, such as training, writing or public speaking. If instead, I am stuck in a job like event management or manual work then my spirit is not going to be fulfilled.

And it is this discrepancy that blows in the gales and hurricanes of discontent and restlessness in the mind. I am forever seeking something, but not quite knowing how to get there.

If you feel that you are aboard a ship other than yours then it is time for you to stop for a moment, check your inner compass and ask yourself who or what is navigating your life.

Take charge of your life! You and only you are at the helm. Only you can determine your state of happiness or the status of your inner peace, or the quality of your contentment.

It's time... to take a good look at your horizon, watch the winds, re-position your sails and sail forth!

"If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever." Saint Thomas Aquinas, Theologian and Philosopher
